Episode 1 : I Knew You When

NBC Season Premiere - A time of uncertainty: Brian "Smash" Williams (Gaius Charles) has graduated and the start of the new school year has Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) uncertain about the strength of his team. Matt Saracen's (Zach Gilford) position as QB1 is in danger when a new freshman star player J.D. McCoy (guest star Jeremy Sumpter) arrives on the scene. Smash continues to deal with his own demons after a season-ending injury causes him to lose his college scholarship. Meanwhile, Tami (Connie Britton) faces stressful challenges as the new principal of Dillon High School. Elsewhere, Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) is encouraged to make a run for student body president. Episode 2 : Tami Knows Best

Emancipation—Smash (Gaius Charles) struggles with his confidence on the field as Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) preps him for college tryouts. Meanwhile, Tami (Connie Britton) makes changes to the school budget and finds that the community cares more about a Jumbotron than education. Elsewhere, Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) is faced with the decision to emancipate himself so he can legally take care of his ailing grandmother—with his father in Iraq, his only hope of saving his grandmother is seeking the help of his estranged mother. Episode 3 : How the Other Half Lives

Under pressure—The pressure builds for Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) to make some changes to his team for an upcoming game. Saracen (Zach Gilford) also feels the heat as the fans lose faith in him and turn to the new quarterback, J.D. McCoy (guest star Jeremy Sumpter). Tim (Taylor Kitsch) gets dragged into a risky business scheme in order to get out of debt, despite Lyla’s (Minka Kelly) caution. Leaving it all behind,— Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) gets wooed by Cash (Zach Roerig), the new bad boy rodeo star in town and says goodbye to her relationship with Landry (Jesse Plemons). After years of being away, Saracen’s (Zach Gilford) mother Shelby (guest star Kim Dickens) tries to re-enter his life as if she never left. Episode 5 : Every Rose Has Its Thorn

Big ideas, big decisions—Tyra’s (Adrianne Palicki) new love, Cash (guest star Zach Roerig), seems to be the man of her dreams but that quickly changes when his dark side comes to light. Jason (Scott Porter) thinks he has a solution to bring him and Erin back together, but she has a very different plan in mind. Meanwhile, after the team wins their big game, Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) makes a decision that leaves Matt (Zach Gilford) to debate the future of his football career. J.D. McCoy (guest star Jeremy Sumpter) has gained popularity as the new star quarterback of the Dillon Panthers but his skills are put to the test at Friday night’s big rival game. Meanwhile, Landry (Jesse Plemons) thinks he is finally over Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) when he meets Devin (Stephanie Hunt) who seems to be the perfect girl, but he quickly learns Devin isn’t who she appears to be. Episode 8 : New York, New York

Jason Street (Scott Porter) follows a job opportunity to New York in an effort to get his family back and brings Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) along for the ride. As Cash (guest star Zach Roerig) gets ready to leave Dillon for his rodeo tour, Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) is torn between following him or her college dream. Tami (Connie Britton) tries to convince Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) into buying a new house while he deals with a sudden vacancy in the Panthers’ coaching staff. Episode 9 : Game of the Week

All eyes are on Dillon as the Panthers’ playoff game is chosen as the nationally televised “high school game of the week.” In the midst of their senior year, Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) debates whether or not to meet with a college coach and Saracen (Zach Gilford) must deal with his grandmother'’s feelings about his college future. Meanwhile, Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) sees the truth about Cash (Zach Roerig) and finds herself in a desperate situation. Episode 10 : The Giving Tree

Buddy Garrity (Brad Leland) has a run-in with the law and is forced to come clean about his financial troubles to Lyla (Minka Kelly). Landry (Jesse Plemons) agrees to tutor Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) for the SAT’s, but he quickly reaches a breaking point. J.D. (guest star Jeremy Sumpter) meets a girl at school but his dad Joe (D.W. Saracen (Zach Gilford) continues to struggle caring for his grandmother as her mental health rapidly deteriorates. Lyla (Minka Kelly) is still reeling after discovering her father gambled away her college fund when she learns that she has been accepted to the college of her dreams. Despite a well-played game on Friday night, tensions between J.D. (guest star Jeremy Sumpter) and Joe (guest star D.W. Moffett) reach a boiling point. Episode 12 : Underdogs

The friendship between the Taylors and McCoys is on thin ice after the scuffle between J.D. (guest star Jeremy Sumpter) and Joe (guest star D.W. Moffett). Buddy tries to repair his relationship with Lyla (Minka Kelly), while Landry (Jesse Plemons) and Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) try to rekindle their romance one more time. Five months after the state championship, everyone is getting ready for some big changes. Tim (Taylor Kitsch) has second thoughts about college; Matt (Zach Gilford) prepares to go to college and leave his grandmother and Julie (Aimee Teegarden) behind; Landry (Jesse Plemons) and Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) face an uncertain future as he helps her make fateful decisions about college; and Lyla’s (Minka Kelly) dreams lay in the hands of her estranged uncle.
